I've been to Montreux several times for Christmas with my family, and each visit has brought new experiences and lovely memories. Here are some tips and insights from my trips to this picturesque city.
Getting There
We drove and took the train from Turin, Italy. But, you can fly to Geneva or other nearby airports and take a train or bus to Montreux.
Where to Stay
Our first stay was in a gorgeous hotel close to the train station. I highly recommend this option for its convenience. Trust me, taking the train is worth it—the views are breath-taking, and if you’re lucky enough to have snow, it feels like you’re traveling through a postcard scene.
We've also stayed in various accommodations including hotels, Airbnbs, and holiday complexes. For large families, renting a villa or apartment in Lugrin on the opposite side of the lake can be ideal. We once had a gathering of over 20 people, and it was both convenient and memorable.
Christmas Market
The Montreux Christmas Market is large, busy, and absolutely charming. You’ll find a abundance of unique items, delicious food, and drinks. There's a spacious covered area with tables and chairs where you can enjoy your street food. While it’s a bit pricey, the quality and variety make it worth it.
One of the highlights is Santa Claus flying above the market and the lake. It's a magical sight, especially for kids (and honestly, for adults too). He usually flies every hour starting from 4 PM, but I am not sure about this information.
Chillon Castle
Though I haven't toured inside, Chillon Castle is a must-see. Located on the lake, it’s accessible by car, bus, train, or even a 25-minute walk. The nearby tree in the middle of the lake adds to the fairy-tale setting.
Santa Claus Train Trip
One of the most enchanting experiences is the train trip to Santa’s house on the mountain. You can book tickets online or at the train station. The slow journey through snowy landscapes feels like a magical adventure. Once at the top, the whole area is festively decorated. After taking a photo with Santa, you can enjoy a snack or drink and explore the stunning views. Remember, it can get very cold and slippery, so dress warmly and wear suitable shoes.
Other Attractions
Montreux also show off a statue of Freddie Mercury, commemorating his time spent in the city. Fans can also visit his accommodation, although I’m not certain if the inside is open to the public.
Recommendations
- Dining: Book restaurants in advance for Christmas meals as they fill up quickly.
- Car Rentals: Renting a car is advisable for exploring around the lake and nearby areas if you have extra days.
- Safety: Don’t leave valuables in your car. We had an unfortunate incident one Christmas Eve when our car was broken into and presents stolen. Despite this, our holiday remained magical, and we’ve returned several times since.
Nearby Cities
You can comfortably explore Montreux in 2-3 days. If you have more time, consider visiting Geneva, which is only 20 minutes away by car. I’ll share more tips on Geneva and the magical city of Evian-les-Bains in my next articles.
