A few years ago, I discovered Evian-les-Bains, the magical city. Based on the edge of Lake Geneva, right across from Montreux, this charming little town is best known for its famous mineral water. But for me, it’s the place where Christmas magic truly comes to life.
Discovering Evian-les-Bains at Christmas
I’ve visited Evian during the Christmas season a couple of times now, and each visit feels like stepping into a winter fairy-tale. I remember the first time I saw the town blanketed in snow—everything looked so pure and enchanting. Last year, there wasn’t as much snow, but the festive spirit was still palpable everywhere.
The highlight for me is always the incredible wooden constructions that pop up all over town. These aren’t your average holiday decorations; they’re massive, intricate works of art. Each year, the town puts up different figures and characters, and the creativity is just mind-blowing.
Exploring the Festivities
One of my favorite things to do is wander through the town center, where you can see these wooden masterpieces up close. And the best part is that these decorations aren’t just confined to one area. They’re everywhere—along the streets, near the port, in little corners you wouldn’t expect. Even if you’re just driving through, you can’t help but be impressed by the festive display.
Christmas Eve in Evian-les-Bains
Christmas Eve in Evian is something truly special. I remember one evening, strolling through the streets and coming across actors dressed in old-fashioned costumes. They were telling stories about how people used to live in Evian, making the past come alive right before our eyes. There was live music, street food, and drinks all around, creating such a warm and joyful atmosphere.
A Memorable Christmas Day
Christmas Day in Evian is equally heartwarming. We attended the morning mass, and when we stepped outside, there were tables set up with free mulled drinks, tea, and sweets. It was such a thoughtful touch and made us feel so welcomed. The whole town seemed to be in high spirits, and I loved how it felt like we were all part of one big festive family.
The Spirit of Evian-les-Bains
What really makes Evian special to me is the vibe. Everyone seems to be in a good mood, and luckily, it’s not overcrowded with tourists. It feels like a secret treasure that not many people have discovered yet.
Fun fact: apparently, the wood for those amazing constructions is collected from the lake over the years. It’s a sustainable way to keep the lake clean and create something beautiful out of it.
Evian-les-Bains might be famous for its water, but for me, it’s the fairy-tale town that brings Christmas to life in the most magical way. If you’re looking for a place with charm, creativity, and a warm community spirit, I can’t recommend it enough. Trust me, a visit to Evian-les-Bains during Christmas will fill your heart with joy and wonder.
