Vienna weekend Getaway: Exploring the Christmas Market
A magical weekend in Vienna exploring iconic landmarks, savouring street food, and enjoying festive Christmas markets, all under enchanting holiday lights.

Back in 2019, my friend and I decided to visit my sister, who was on an Erasmus exchange in a small city near Vienna, Wiener Neustadt. While the main reason for our visit was to see her, it turned into a beautiful city break under the enchanting Christmas lights of Vienna.

Arrival and First Impressions

Our trip was short, just a weekend from Friday night to Sunday afternoon. We arrived very late on Friday and got a bit lost. With no taxis around, we ended up walking for an hour in the dark through a remote area. Despite this little adventure, the transport from the airport was straightforward. We took a train but mistakenly got off one stop too early, leading to our late-night walk.

Exploring Vienna on Saturday

Saturday was dedicated to exploring the Austrian capital, and it turned out to be an unforgettable day. We started early, using the train and public transport to get around, although Vienna's charm makes it wonderfully walkable.

Our first stop was the Stephansdom Cathedral. It's impossible to miss if you're in the centre. Its towering spires and intricate details are a testament to Vienna's rich history and architectural prowess.

Next, we wandered through the city, coming across the magnificent Belvedere Palace and the historic Hofburg Palace. Even though we didn’t have time to explore these sites inside, seeing them from the outside was still a treat. Their imposing structures and beautiful facades gave us a glimpse into Vienna’s imperial past.

We have tried some of Vienna's street food. We found a stand selling giant, delicious hot dogs, which were a perfect snack as we continued our exploration. For a more relaxed break, we headed to the Lamée Rooftop. Sipping on delicious mulled wine while taking in stunning views of the city centre and the cathedral.

Vienna's shopping scene is also impressive, with plenty of options in the city center. We popped into a few shops, but the one that stood out the most was Swarovski. The dazzling displays were absolutely amazing. If you love sparkling things as much as I do, this is a must-visit.

As the day turned dark, we made our way to the famous Vienna's Christmas Market, Rathausplatz. The market was truly magical, especially as the twinkling lights began to illuminate the stalls. We enjoyed a picturesque ice skating rink, small but beautiful against the festive backdrop. The market was filled with Christmas decorations, charming trinkets, and delicious food and drinks. Riding the panoramic Ferris wheel, we were treated to breath-taking views of the festive scene below. It was pure magic, though my sister was a bit terrified of the height.

Sunday in Wiener Neustadt

Sunday was spent in Wiener Neustadt, my sister's charming small town. It had a quaint Christmas market with live music and dancing, creating a lovely atmosphere.

Final Thoughts

Though our trip was short, Vienna left a lasting impression. If you have more time, there are other places worth visiting:

Recommendations:

  • Sacher Cake: A sweet treat invented in Vienna that is a must-try.
  • Vienna State Opera: Known for its stunning architecture and world-class performances, it's a must-visit for any music or culture lover.

Conclusion

Vienna in December is pure magic, especially during the Christmas season. The lights, markets, and festive spirit make it a perfect destination for a winter city break.
