Road Trip Croatia: A European Summer Adventure
Join me on a budget-friendly road trip through Croatia, from seaside towns and national parks to island adventures.

🗺️ Trip Overview

This summer’s trip started with a purpose, I had to attend a wedding in Serbia in early August. Since direct flights were pricey, I turned it into a full-on road trip through Croatia.

My sister had just bought her first car and suggested we take it for an European road trip. Our plans quickly evolved when my brother and sister-in-law joined in. We all met in Milan, where my sister picked us up.

We spent our first night in a modest spot just outside the city — simple, budget-friendly, and perfect for a good rest before hitting the road.

Rovinj: A Charming Start

The first destination of our road trip to Croatia was Rovinj, a picturesque town near the Italian border. We stayed in the heart of the old town, where cars aren’t allowed, but the stunning sea view made it worth it. We spent three days and two nights there.

On the first day, we explored without a map, something I always do on the first day in a new city. Wandering with no plan often leads to unexpected gems. We discovered small shops with fresh local produce and dined at what turned out to be the best seafood restaurant I’ve ever tried.

After dinner, we waled along the harbour and impulsively booked a sunset dolphin-watching tour for around €10–15 for two hours on the sea. While we didn’t see many dolphins, the views were absolutely magical. We ended the night with a delicious ice cream and some well-earned rest.

The next day was all about the beach. We found a beautiful spot within walking distance, half sandy beach, half shaded grassy picnic area. We chose the grass under the trees, skipping umbrellas and sand. The water was clear and warm, perfect for a relaxing swim. There was even a nearby park with hiking trails, which we briefly explored.

That evening, we climbed up to the church of St. Euphemia at the top of the hill, just in time for sunset. From above, the city lights glowed beautifully, and a live street performance added to the romantic, magical vibe. The descent, however, was a bit slippery, something to keep in mind if it’s recently rained!

Pag: Party Island and Village Fest

Our next stop was Pag, a destination my sister was excited about, especially because of its party reputation. From the north, there are two ways to get to the island: by bridge or ferry. We chose the ferry and brought the car along, which was incredibly convenient.

At first, Pag felt like a deserted, dry land, almost lunar. We stayed two nights in an apartment with a sea view, just five minutes from the beach. The island is small, so beach access is easy from anywhere.

Our first night we visited Zrće Beach, known for its beach clubs and nightlife. We tried out four or five different venues, each with a unique vibe and music. It was fun, especially if you're into clubbing, though we called it a night around 3 a.m.

The following day was a slow one: lounging on the beach, enjoying seaside lunch, and later visiting Pag Town, which exceeded expectations. On 29th July, the town hosted a lively celebration with music, performers, and a great atmosphere, more of a “village fest” feel compared to the nightclubs. We loved both experiences.

Our third destination was the breath-taking Plitvička Jezera National Park. We pre-booked our tickets online, which included transport within the park. The area is massive, and while it’s impossible to see everything in one day, you can choose different routes based on how much you want to explore.

Even in summer, the weather can be unpredictable so pack a rain jacket and layers! Also, bring snacks and water, as cafes are sparse inside the park. The scenery? Absolutely stunning. Countless waterfalls, crystal-clear lakes, and well-marked hiking paths. It’s no surprise it gets crowded, be prepared to queue at popular spots.

We skipped Krka National Park the next day due to rain and our growing satisfaction with what we’d already seen. Instead, we stayed in a cosy mountain apartment, Plitvice Nest in Rakovica, one of the most beautiful of our entire trip. Fewer dining options were available nearby, but we found a restaurant that served fantastic fish dishes at very reasonable prices.

Split & St. Martin: A Serene Detour

Since we cut one stop, while on the road we spontaneously booked a place near Split, in the quiet village of St. Martin. Avoiding the crowds of Split city turned out to be a great decision. Our room in Beach Villa Bozikovic was a dream, with a private beach and sea-view balcony.

We arrived late, grabbed takeaway pizza, and enjoyed a peaceful night on the terrace with drinks, music, a glowing sunset, and the brightest moon. It was one of the most relaxing nights of our road trip in Croatia.

Dubrovnik - Lopud Island: The Grand Finale

Next, we drove to Dubrovnik and parked at the port before heading to Lopud Island, where we stayed for four days and three nights, no car needed. The island is small and easily walkable, making it perfect for a slow-paced holiday.

Every view looked like a postcard. The island offered plenty of restaurants and bars, we tried many and found a few favourites. This was our time to truly relax. We spent most of the days on the beach but also explored some local activities.

For my brother’s birthday, my sister gifted him a kayak tour — which led to a hilarious mishap when he and his wife capsized. They returned early to the hotel while my sister and I continued the tour, visiting two nearby islands. It was a long day (from noon until 6 p.m.), but so worth it.

Serbia: Family Time & Celebration

After Lopud, we headed to Serbia for my cousin’s wedding and spent two nights reconnecting with family. It was short but lovely.

Zagreb: Final Stop Before Italy

Before heading back to Italy, we stayed a night near Zagreb — more for rest than tourism. We booked a quiet, affordable apartment outside the city, which turned out perfect. The local restaurant served delicious meals at a very reasonable price.

We didn’t explore Zagreb itself, as the Museum of Broken Relationships (our only point of interest) was under renovation, and we felt ready to end the journey. Perhaps next time!

Wrapping Up in Verona

Our final stop was a full day in Verona before flying back home, you can read about that in my other post: Verona in one day.

Final Thoughts

This road trip through Croatia was a beautiful mix of spontaneity, natural wonders, relaxation, and a bit of partying. Croatia (and the detours through Italy and Serbia) offered more than I expected, and it was all made even better by sharing it with family. Whether you love beaches, national parks, or charming old towns — Croatia has it all.
